Wow! Wow! Wow! – And I am not pertaining to the scenery. Hot Yoga is difficult! I was so exhausted, dizzy, and for sure starving half way through – But all of it was worth it in the end. That being said, if I did not have food hiding in my car, I probably would not be typing this post.
I went for my first session today to Bikram Yoga Kelowna. I had done it once or twice a few years ago but I do not recall it being so exhausting, physically and mentally, as it was today.
I think it was exhausting due to my shift in mind-set this time around. I have committed to going 10 times this month. For those that have done their 30 day challenge, relax with the thought of thinking only 10 times.
First, it was harder this time around due to my commitment of truly focus on proper form and concentration. Second, why only 10 times? Purpose of doing this is to see if it helps some of my injuries, so I need to make sure I do not do more harm then good.
How do I feel right after? As I type this all I can think of is taking a nap. I could barely get through my shower as all I could think about is food. Someone told me you can burn an average of 1000 calories in one class.
I do believe there is pleasure in pain – as I am feeling it right at this moment.

This was one pose I did not even come close to achieving, yet.
Few suggestions if you want to try it for the first time:
1. I think the session at Bikram Yoga Kelowna was amazing. If you are in Kelowna, try that class. The instructor was incredible in guiding a beginner like myself and at the same time supporting the advanced students.
2. You do burn a lot of calories. As much as they say do not eat too close to the class, make sure you have enough calories to sustain yourself. It truly becomes a test of the mind when you are dizzy due to starvation.
3. This leads to the 3rd advice. As much as it might be an ill practice to have a small watch by your corner. I found myself for the last 30 minutes losing my focus due to not knowing how much longer I was to mentally fight through my tiredness and hunger.
4. The rest are the norms – bring 2 towels, drink water few hours before the session and bring a large bottle of water for the class.
Anyone else just start doing yoga? How do you find it?
Those that are doing it for a while – I am open to any advice and more so support and encouragement.
Thanks for sharing.

That’s awesome Fred!
I also just started hot yoga in Kelowna and I LOVE it. I love the mental challenge of it and how my success that day is a reflection of not just my physical state but my mental and emotional state as well.
I love my 90 minute power class for bringing my thoughts inward and slowing my mind to focus on me for a short while. I leave feeling stronger and more flexible physically and mentally.
Have fun and enjoy your challenge, I look forward to reading a recap when you’re done
Deanne, that is awesome. I think I will wait for the POWER yoga.
Work my way up to it.
Good job, Fred! Watch out for injuries. When room is heated
like that your body is more flexible and relaxed. You may make
injuries worst.
Miranda, that is why I committed to 10 instead of the 30 day challenge.
For those that are in Toronto – Check out Miranda’s work with young youth and boxing.

Keep up the great work.
It is so intense, after the first class I hated everything about going until about 5 minutes after I left. Then, it was amazing. I felt better than I have for a long time.
Good for you Fred, I hope we can yoga it up together.
Ivan, have you got to the point where you enjoy the class more then actually disliking it? – I know after the class I feel amazing – but I still struggle during the class. I have done 5 now and on the 5th one I actually felt some improvement, got me excited.
It would be awesome to see you there. Flying out today till monday night and will be back at it after that.
I went once and couldn’t make my body do the things they asked me to do. I looked like a idiot and was all sweaty to boot. I don’t think I can face hot yoga again.
